Today, Hong Kong celebrates 10 years after being handed over from British to China on July 1, 1997, after 156 years under the colony. The return of Hong Kong to its motherhood, China, was well celebrated by Chinese.
Talking about Hong Kong, there are similarities between Hong Kong and Singapore. In the past before British arrived, both were fishermen villages and there were pirate activities. After the arrival of British, the two places had been converted to busy ports, even until present day.
However, Hong Kong and Singapore were obtained by British in different manners. British took over Hong Kong by 99 years contract in 1898 whereas Singapore was given to British forever under an agreement between local ruler, Tengku Hussein and Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819.
As a result, Hong Kong today is integrated back with China whereas Singapore is still an independent country. While Singapore is still continuing with its own administration, Hong Kong might be struggling to adapt with China in terms of language, culture, education, local laws etc.
